Rocket Lab

Long Beach · Since 2006

Still independent and publicly traded. It launches small payloads and is trying to reuse its larger rocket.

A later timeline chapter projects a role for this organization. That chapter is a projection. This page is about the institution as it exists, or as it existed.

Peter Beck founded Rocket Lab in New Zealand in 2006. The company built Electron, a small orbital rocket, and launched it from the Mahia Peninsula. It later moved much of the business to the United States and became a public company. The rocket is the product. So is the factory that tries to build rockets the way a plant builds other machines.

Small launch is a narrow market. Rocket Lab has added spacecraft components and a larger vehicle, Neutron, because a ride for a single small satellite is not, by itself, a large employer for long.

The turnaround job

The people the 2045 chapter cares about are already visible here: technicians who integrate a vehicle, test it, and prepare a pad. A small rocket does not need a city. It needs a crew that can do the same dangerous sequence without improvising. Beck's company is one of the places that crew exists outside the two or three giant programs.

Independent, for now

Rocket Lab is still an independent public company. The timeline notes that specialist launchers may be acquired. That is a risk, not a eulogy. The page lists the firm because the occupation of building and flying a small orbital rocket already has a private employer, founded well before any projected space economy.

The work it organized

  • Launch technician
  • Propulsion engineer
  • Pad crew
