Still independent. The old Société Générale d'Entreprises took the Vinci name in 2000.
A later timeline chapter projects a role for this organization. That chapter is a projection. This page is about the institution as it exists, or as it existed.
Société Générale d'Entreprises was founded in France in 1899. In 2000 it took the name Vinci. Between those dates it became a concessions company as well as a builder: it constructs roads, rail, and airports, and it often operates them afterward under a long contract.
The combination matters for employment. A construction crew finishes and disperses. A concession keeps a maintenance staff for decades. Vinci does both, which makes it a larger and more stable employer than a contractor that only pours and leaves.
Crews and concessions
The payroll includes civil engineers, equipment operators, and the toll-road and airport workers of the concessions. Projects are won country by country. A French parent does not mean a French crew. The 2050 chapter's point in naming Vinci beside Bechtel is that the people who would raise, drain, or relocate infrastructure already have employers, and in Europe this is one of them.
A present contractor
Vinci is public and independent. Airports, highways, and energy projects are current work. Nothing here requires the projection to be true for the company to be a real employer. The projection is only a guess about the order book.
