Still private, and still controlled by the Bechtel family.
A later timeline chapter projects a role for this organization. That chapter is a projection. This page is about the institution as it exists, or as it existed.
Warren Bechtel began as a railroad construction hand in the Oklahoma Territory in 1898 and built a company that graded track, then dams, then almost anything a government would contract. Hoover Dam was the project that made the name national. The company is still private, and still run by the family.
Bechtel does not operate the power plant it builds, as a rule. It employs the people who raise it: engineers, craft workers, and a project staff that lives on site for years and then leaves. The 2050 chapter names that kind of firm because adaptation, if it is real, is concrete and drainage, not a report.
The camp
A large Bechtel job is a temporary town. Welders, electricians, and civil engineers are hired for the duration, often through union halls and subcontractors. The company's permanent staff is the people who estimate, plan, and move to the next site. Employment spikes and ends. That rhythm is the occupation, and it is older than any climate policy. A seawall would be staffed the same way Boulder Dam was.
Still family-held
Bechtel remains private, which means the catalogue cannot read its health in a share price. It remains busy with infrastructure and industrial plants. The projection that pairs it with Vinci is about future contracts. The company that would bid on them is the one Warren Bechtel's descendants still control.
