Still private. It has begun small clinical implants aimed at restoring function. It is not a workplace product.

A later timeline chapter projects a role for this organization. That chapter is a projection. This page is about the institution as it exists, or as it existed.

Neuralink was founded in 2016. It is developing an implant, threads of electrodes and a small package, intended to read and write neural signals. The stated near-term use is medical: helping people with severe paralysis. The public conversation is rarely that modest.

The company has begun small human implants. It is private, closely associated with Elon Musk, and still a clinical research effort. It is not a workplace tool, and a page that treated it as one would be borrowing the 2040 chapter's projection and mislabeling it as news.

A surgical startup

The staff are neuroscientists, roboticists, and the engineers of a custom surgical robot, because the threads are too fine to place by an unaided hand. There are also the clinicians and the trial coordinators any device company must have before a regulator will watch. The headcount is small. The claims in the press are not. The museum records the employment and the regulatory stage, which are checkable, and leaves the rest in the projection chapter where it belongs.

Most of these firms will not stay independent

The timeline says the category may survive even if the company does not. That is the right caution. Neuralink is active now. It may be acquired, outrun, or become a medical product inside a larger device company. None of those outcomes makes the current lab fictional, and none of them makes a consumer brain implant a fact.
