Was the job of elevator operator physically demanding?

The job of an elevator operator could be physically demanding depending on the type of elevator and the size of the building. In older buildings with manual elevators, operators were required to manually open and close the elevator doors and pull levers to operate the elevator. This could be physically strenuous, especially during peak hours when the elevator was constantly in use.
