Quantinuum

Broomfield, Colorado · Since 2021

Still operating, formed by merging Honeywell's quantum unit with Cambridge Quantum. Honeywell remains a major owner.

A later timeline chapter projects a role for this organization. That chapter is a projection. This page is about the institution as it exists, or as it existed.

Quantinuum was formed in 2021 by combining Honeywell Quantum Solutions with Cambridge Quantum. It builds trapped-ion machines and the software around them. Honeywell, an industrial company old enough to have nothing romantic about it, remained a major owner.

The ownership matters. This is not only a startup living on the next round. It is a quantum group inside the habits of a manufacturer that already employs process engineers, quality staff, and a legal department. The science is still early. The corporate form is not.

Two workforces

Physicists and quantum-software researchers do the work the announcements describe. Around them is the staff a Honeywell-scale owner already knows how to hire: program managers, safety officers, the people who turn a lab result into a delivery a government contract will accept. The 2035 projection needs both. A machine nobody can operate twice is not a business.

A present employer

Quantinuum is operating. The timeline's caution, that any of these firms might be absorbed or outrun, applies here as much as to a startup. The page records the merger and the work, and leaves the winner unnamed.
