NextEra Energy

Juno Beach, Florida · Since 1925

Still independent. Florida Power & Light took the NextEra name for its parent company in 2010.

A later timeline chapter projects a role for this organization. That chapter is a projection. This page is about the institution as it exists, or as it existed.

Florida Power & Light was formed in 1925. The parent company renamed itself NextEra Energy in 2010, keeping the utility and adding a large business that develops wind and solar far from Florida. The name is new. The occupation, running a grid people cannot opt out of, is not.

NextEra is in the 2050 chapter because a projection about stewardship that starts with slogans instead of utilities has started in the wrong place. Someone already employs the crews who connect a plant to a substation.

Two workforces, one holding company

The utility employs lineworkers, plant operators, and call-center staff who answer when the power fails. The development arm employs project managers, turbine technicians, and the people who spend years on permits before a single foundation is poured. Both are NextEra. The lineworker is the older job and the one a storm still requires. The development staff is the growth.

A present utility

The company is independent and publicly traded. Nothing on this page depends on the 2050 projection coming true. If that chapter's larger restoration economy arrives, firms like this one are the seed of the payroll. If it does not, NextEra is still the company that keeps the lights on in Florida and runs wind farms elsewhere.
