Standard Oil of New Jersey became Exxon in 1972 and merged with Mobil in 1999. The company is still among the largest private employers in energy.
When the Supreme Court broke up Standard Oil in 1911, Standard Oil of New Jersey kept the largest share of the assets and the holding-company habit. It sold gasoline under Esso and other names, drilled internationally, and in 1972 renamed itself Exxon, a word coined so it could be pronounced in many languages and owned as a trademark.
The merger with Mobil in 1999 reassembled two of the 1911 pieces. ExxonMobil is the descendant the timeline means when it talks about the oil company that, for years, earned more than the firms inventing the internet.
A global shift schedule
Geologists, drilling crews, refinery operators, and tanker sailors were one workforce spread across jurisdictions. A posting was a career stage. The clerical and engineering staff in the United States managed reserves and governments. Unlike a railway, the asset moved, and so did the employee. The company town did not disappear. It became a compound in a place the company had negotiated with a state.
Still the large employer
ExxonMobil remains independent and still among the largest private employers in energy, even as its own statements now include businesses that are not oil. The page does not treat a later rebranding as a death. The 1911 Jersey company is continuous with this one in a way the Pennsylvania Railroad is not continuous with anything. Standard Oil's page records the trust. This one records what the largest piece did after the trust was illegal.
